You can have a flower garden, despite the deer!

Iris

One of the reasons people love the Pocono Mountains, is the thrill of seeing the wildlife - particularly the abundance of deer. Unfortunately, those beautiful deer can wreak havoc on your gardens. But, did you know that there ARE plants that the deer likely won't eat on you?

I have had success with these deer resistant plants in my garden: Iris, Bleeding Hearts, Butterly Bush, Lupines, Peonies, Poppies, Cone Flowers, Lavendar, Phlox, Butterfly and Shasta Daisies, Geraniums, and my favorite, Daffodils. Someone told me tulips, but I have caught them in the act so I know they definitely eat tulips - usually just before the buds are about to open. As for vegetable gardens, nothing is going to save you except a really high fence! Deer treat vegetable gardens as their own private salad bar.

I have not tried this on the vegetable garden as I do not like using chemicals near anything I plan on eating, but I have found that the product "Liquid Fence" does do a pretty good job of keeping the deer (and rabbits) away from flowers as long as you don't mind the smell. Word of advice though, you do have to reapply fairly frequently, especially if it rains and it can get expensive.

One other word of advice, I never plant anything before Memorial Day as here in The Poconos we can get a killing frost right up to the end of May.

Happy Gardening!
